I live about 3 miles west of the fiesta park and there are usually one or two days each year when I can look out from my back porch and see the sky filled with balloons. I have seen days when there are many balloons in the sky over the UNM area and some days when they head north towards Bernallilo. But it is not uncommon for the balloons to head off to the south or north. It is referred to as 'the box.' Pilots can take off, go one direction, go higher and find winds that take them back in the other direction.
One of the things about the Balloon Fiesta Park is that at different levels, you get different wind directions. If the winds are right, it can be a fantastic place to watch from. No matter what direction the winds are blowing, you can see balloons from Second Street, west of the fiesta park.
